So,what's the story about violence in Philadelphia?
available in a booklet
The content of the exhibition at the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia and installed in kiosk exhibits at five branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia is now in booklet form. The exhibitions and booklet are AKMP's contribution to the Philadelphia Partnership for Peace, a two-year initiative to combat youth violence, headed by the Free Library of Philadelphia. In addition to the Free Library that coordinated city-wide, anti-violence programming and resources, other partners in the collaboration are the House of UMOJA in West Philadelphia that prepared a DVD related to its work with gangs and WXPN-FM Kid's Corner that produced anti-violence program broadcasts. Kiosk exhibitions are on display at the following library branches:

Wyoming Branch Library, 231 East Wyoming Avenue
Widener Branch Library, 2802 West Lehigh Avenue
Wynnefield Branch Library, 5325 Overbrook Avenue
Blanche A. Nixon/Cobbs Creek Library, 5800 Cobbs Creek Parkway
Paschalville Branch Library, 6942 Woodland Avenue.

So, what's the story about violence in Philadelphia? provides historical context to an issue of extraordinary contemporary importance. It engages participants in the reasons for violence in the city since the 1820s, informing them of ways in which communities have addressed the issue and highlighting government initiatives. It also includes a comparison of violence in Philadelphia with other cities. In addition, children are invited to make a personal pledge against violence and to find ways to take action against violent behavior at home and in the neighborhood. There is a list of resources in the city to assist individuals who are living in fear.
