Philadelphia-native, designer, and author Lawrence O’Toole will speak at the Philadelphia History Museum, Thursday, May 16, 2013, about Philadelphia’s historically significant hand-painted outdoor signage dating from the late-1800s to the 1960s. Fading Ads of Philadelphia, is part of the History Museum’s popular Conversations series. The program will beginat 5:00 p.m. at the Philadelphia History Museum, 15 South 7th Street, Philadelphia.

Charlene Mires, associate professor of History at Rutgers-Camden and co-recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism, will discuss her newly published book, Capital of the World, in a public program presented jointly by the Philadelphia History Museum, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia. The program, Capital of the World: Philadelphia’s Race to Host the United Nations, is part of the History Museum’s popular and engaging Conversations series. The program will take place on April 3, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.

Get ready for a very merry time. Dress in your cocktail best, big hats encouraged!

Vintage hats and artifacts from the Museum's collection, live music, delicious tea-sized treats, and a "Summer in the City" raffle complete the evening.

 

An event in its third year, the Museum's Cocktails in the Courtyard has been attended by over 400 Museum members and guests since 2011. Funds raised from the event support the Young Friends mission to educate Philadelphia's youth through funding Museum visits for school groups.

Beer drinkers have long enjoyed collecting just about everything with a brewery name or brand on it — what we call breweriana today. Held in conjunction with Philly Beer Week 2013, the Museum presents Conversations: Breweriana, Collecting Beer Memorabilia.

Noted local collectors, Larry Handy and Dale Van Wieren will talk about this fascinating hobby, how it started, why they do it and how you can too. Learn about the history of beer-related objects and what makes certain items rare and valuable.

The discussion will be followed by a live colonial beer-making demonstration in the Museum’s Marian Mitchell Garden by beer historian Rich Wagner. Wagner will show how beer was made in the 18th century by using the same kinds of hops, barley, and wooden tools used to brew beer in Philadelphia 250 years ago. This Conversation is held in conjunction with the exhibition, Made in Philadelphia, Craft Brewing: It's a Beer Revolution, on view at the Museum through June 30, 2013.

Visitors are invited to view the Museum's exhibitions from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The program begins promptly at 3:00 p.m. Beer making demonstration to follow.

In conjunction with the History Museum's current Community History Gallery exhibition, Reinventing the Row Home for Energy Efficient Living, by the Energy Coordinating Agency, the Museum, ECA, and EnergyWorks will host the "Energy Efficient Workshop."

During the program, attendees can Learn about low-rate financing for energy efficient home improvements that can help lower your utility bills and make your home more enjoyable. Attendees are eligible to win a FREE home energy assessment valued at $150.00.

Representatives from PGW and PECO will be on hand to announce new program incentives.
